When seventeen-year-old William Hunter marches off to war in the spring of 1780, the Glorious Cause of the American Revolution seems all but lost. Many of the largest cities in his new country are occupied by the forces of King George III, and the noose is tightening around the city of Charleston, South Carolina. Leaving Bethesda Orphanage with nothing more than a kiss from Catherine DeLoach, William sets out to defend his country. His dreams of victory and glory are quickly smashed by the realities of war as he finds that he has enlisted in a desperate struggle against the most powerful empire in the World. William is imprisoned on the infamous prison ship, Packhorse. There his hopes and dreams are kept alive only through the letters he writes to Catherine, the beautiful Huguenot girl who waved him off to war with nothing more than a simple kiss and a promise he will keep at all costs

In 2009 Gerald G. Stokes Jr. published "Letters for Catherine," a work of historical fiction of the modern “young adult” genre. Like William Gilmore Simms, Stokes penned a Revolutionary War trilogy of which "Letters to Catherine" was the final installment. In his coming-of-age novel of romance and adventure Stokes managed to stay close to the facts, basing his story in part on the memoir of Maj. William Hazzard Wigg, a friend of Col. Isaac Hayne who may have been present at Hayne’s hanging. Stokes used the Hayne affair at the climax of a plot that unfolds aboard the notorious prison ships Pack Horse and Torbay in Charleston harbor where American prisoners were confined under miserable conditions by the British during the occupation summer of 1781. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.Product details

Letters For Catherine Colonial Southeast Series Volume 3 G G Stokes Jr 9781542803847 Books Reviews
Very good read! Story presents the humanity, and inhumanity, of the struggle exceptionally well, and is woven with the craftsmanship of an experienced weaver of stories.
Such a great book. I love that the book is written on a less popular vantage point of the war. Highly recommend for historical fiction lovers.
